The complexity of international electronics supply chains is the main reason why fair and sustainable electronics are lagging far behind other sustainable product movements. When we started Syllucid, we knew this was going to be a challenge. If you want to create a fair fruit, for example, you just talk to the people who grow it and then take it from there. For electronics, it is not that simple. In order to assemble a product like a laptop, you need thousands of suppliers to deliver individual components. These suppliers have their own suppliers and sub-suppliers, and they source raw materials from all over the world.
The next problem is that you need stable industry partnerships to fix supply chains in the long term. Since new phones and laptops are coming out every year, also their supply chains and manufacturers change altogether. This means after long investigations of their supply chains – you may have to start again from scratch.
For startups, who have championed sustainability and fairness in other industries, that is a major headache. A substantial amount of expertise, time, and resources are needed to tackle the issues that the electronics industry faces.
Solving complicated problems with something simple
To be able to tackle this problem, we decided to focus on electronic products with less complex supply chains: electronic accessories. This means we can research problems better, work with partners to fix them, and scale the learnings to other products. We are starting with probably the least complex of them: a USB cable. USB cables have fewer suppliers and individual components (than laptops or phones for instance).
We are powering a better future: With a fair and sustainable USB cable
Using this approach was so successful that over the last nine months we have been able to investigate the supply chain of our first product, understand the biggest problems, and with the help of different partners improve many parts of it already. The result is very promising – we created the first USB cable in the world that supports Fairtrade gold, we produce it with conflict-free and recycled minerals and materials – and we did even more! With the Syllucid Charge, we created a fair and sustainable alternative to charging.
We’re building a value-driven community
This is why we need you. With your support, we can create real change in the electronics industry, showing that fair and sustainable electronics can become mainstream. Just like fair and sustainable food and clothing already are. USB charging cables are now essential for our daily lives, and there is a good chance you, or someone you know, needs one.
