Syllucid’s Community Invests in Agroforestry in Peru and Mangrove Restoration in Indonesia with Partner PUR
Thanks to your incredible support, we have made a real difference together! Through your contributions, Syllucid has partnered with PUR, a leader in sustainable agroforestry and ecosystem restoration, to plant trees in Peru and Indonesia. The planting was financed with the help of the Syllucid community by contributing a part of each sale directly to the project.
Together, we’ve planted 70 trees in Peru and 60 mangrove trees in Indonesia. These efforts have helped farmers and fishing communities adapt to climate change while regenerating agricultural landscapes. PUR’s projects are designed to improve farmers’ livelihoods by diversifying revenues. Their field teams provide ongoing support for planting, maintenance, and monitoring of the reforested plots.
As a result, the projects:
- Enhance biodiversity
- Support local communities
- Restore critical ecosystems
- Strengthen climate resilience
The Projects We Have Supported with PUR
Jubilacion Segura Project in Peru
The Jubilacion Segura project, launched in 2008, supports smallholder cocoa and coffee farming communities by implementing agroforestry systems and reforesting degraded landscapes. This initiative is based in the Yungas Peruanas, a biodiversity hotspot rich in watersheds and home to the ancient ruins of Gran Pajatén.
Jaga Mangroves Project in Indonesia
The Jaga Mangroves project, meaning "Protect Mangroves," began in 2022. It focuses on community-led mangrove restoration across eight regions in Indonesia. Through awareness programs and support for small agribusinesses, this project ensures long-term success while protecting the vital mangrove ecosystems that safeguard coastal areas and provide sustainable livelihoods.
Why Transparency and Trees Matter to Syllucid
At Syllucid, we are committed to creating products from fairer, more sustainable materials. Transparency is at the core of our mission. We believe that consumers deserve to know:
- Where their products come from
- How they’re made
- What impact they have on the world
This philosophy drives our efforts to improve our supply chain, restore regions impacted by materials that are traditionally used to build products that we offer, and produce durable and more sustainable tech products.
The Hidden Cost of Gold in Electronics
Gold is one of those materials we use in our products, which is also a key component in many electronic devices we use every day. Its superior conductivity and corrosion resistance make it indispensable. However, the hidden cost of gold mining, particularly in the Amazon rainforest, is alarming:
- Deforestation: Forests are cleared for mining, destroying vital ecosystems.
- Toxic Chemicals: Mercury and other substances contaminate water sources and harm local communities, leaving behind uninhabitable and polluted land.
- Human Exploitation: Due to extreme poverty in some of those regions, there is often little other choice for miners than to work in illegal gold mines to find an income, placing themselves in extreme danger for little pay.
This gold often enters global supply chains, making its way into electronics, jewelry, and other consumer goods. While the gold itself might seem like a small part of your device, its origins are part of a much larger and complex problem.
Partnering with PUR to Find Sustainable Solutions
Once we uncovered the destructive impact that gold mining has on the Amazon, we knew we had to take action. That’s when we decided to find sustainable solutions that could help address the issue. As a first step, we committed to sourcing Fairtrade Gold from Peru, working with the cooperative Fairever to ensure that the gold in our products is ethically mined and does not contribute to deforestation or exploitation.
We’re also proud to have supported local farmers in Peru through the Jubilacion Segura agroforestry project, helping them to generate sustainable incomes while restoring the Amazon’s vital ecosystems. This partnership with PUR allows us to directly support communities impacted by deforestation and to invest in long-term solutions that help both people and the environment.
While we know that this isn’t a complete fix — large-scale protection of the Amazon is crucial — it’s an important first step to understand the impact of the electronics industry on this large problem - and find a better way forward.
Moving Forward: How You Can Help
That’s why Syllucid will continue to work with PUR, and has committed to contribute 1% of our revenue to support tree planting.
As consumers, we have a critical role to play. You can help by supporting companies that:
- Advocate for greater transparency and accountability
- Prioritize responsible sourcing
Together, we can ensure that technology and sustainability go hand in hand — without sacrificing the health of our planet or the rights of the communities that depend on it.
Thank you for being a part of the Syllucid community and for helping us plant the seeds for a more sustainable tech industry.
